New technology is
set to improve
your life as a car
owner and how
the NRMA can
best serve you
AS MOTORISTS, WE KNOW that at times, driving
can be difficult and frustrating.
Whether you live in Sydney, Canberra or a regional
city or town, you’d be all too familiar with navigating
congested roads or driving around in circles looking
for an empty parking spot. Then there’s the cost of
fuel, the price of car repairs and, if you’re unlucky,
the inconvenience of a breakdown.
It’s a motorist’s lot but help is on its way. Over the last
few months, the NRMA has been trialling something
called a ‘connected car device’. This technology is going
to change how we drive and how we look after our cars
– for the better.
The device works by plugging into your car’s computer
through an on-board diagnostic or OBD-II connector. You
might not know it, but your car’s computer stores data
about everything going on and constantly diagnoses any
problems that might arise. Some of the latest, top-of-
the-range vehicles do this automatically but most cars
have the capabilities with the right additional device.
Cars are far smarter than most of us realise!
From the connected car device, data is then sent to
your phone for you to read. Once upon a time, only
mechanics had access to this information, but the device
enables us all to check on the inner workings of our cars.
There are a number of potential applications we will be
testing in the new year.
When you’re stuck on the side of the road, for
example, our patrolmen will know where you are, will get
to you faster, and hopefully even diagnose the problem
before they arrive. The device can warn you when your
battery is about to go flat and, if you wish, you can
choose to have the NRMA alert you if the device detects
something wrong with your car. It can even message
you in advance if your car is due for a service.
There’s also the potential to coach learners to be safer
drivers through monitoring their driving capabilities
out on the road. As a father of children who will soon
be learning to drive, I am interested in anything that
will help keep them safe.
The device itself is still cutting-edge technology and
the NRMA is looking to trial its own customised version
in the new year. We want it to be simple to use and
become your ‘companion on the road’. The plan is to
make your driving life that little bit easier and save you
time and money in repairs and servicing.
I’ll be able to give you the results of our trials soon
and, of course, I ’ll let you know when we can offer these
new devices to interested Members.
I’ve been doing a lot of driving through regional areas
recently and it’s sobering to see so many crosses
placed at the sides of our major highways. Every cross
represents someone who has died on our roads and
the heartbroken families and friends left behind.
In NSW, there has been a tragic increase in the
road toll this year. As the festive season approaches,
I hope we can all drive carefully and look out for our
On behalf of everyone at the NRMA, I wish all our
Members a happy and safe Christmas and New Year.
