All gain and no pain
The already impressive Mazda6 gets a mid-cycle update to become quieter, safer and even more refined
DESPITE A RAFT of enhancements, pricing
on the updated Mazda6 remains the same.
There are four equipment levels (Sport,
Touring, GT and Atenza) and two engine
choices (a 2.5 -litre petrol or 2.2 -litre diesel).
Exterior changes are so subtle, even
Mazda’s own marketing director admits it’s
hard to tell the difference. The wing mirrors
have been redesigned (now auto-folding on
the Touring model grades and above), there
are LED rear lights on all models, and the
wagon has a shark-fin antenna.
Inside, however, the changes are more
noticeable. There’s a full-colour instrument
cluster, improved driving position memory,
a new steering wheel, a rear centre armrest
redesign, and heated rear seats for the GT
Atenza models have been given a more
premium touch with Nappa leather seats,
new titanium trim highlights, black
headlining and LED lighting. Its cabin and
the GT’s are even quieter thanks to new
acoustic glass for the front doors.
Safety has also been upgraded. Mazda’s
Smart City Brake Support system now
recognises pedestrians. It has an expanded
detection range, wider viewing angle, and
can now be operated at higher speeds. The
GT and Atenza models get traffic sign
recognition as well, where the speed limit is
displayed on the head-up display window.
The new 6 gains G-Vectoring Control,
which uses a series of throttle inputs aimed
at altering the car’s balance, especially in
corners, to keep it more stable so the driver
needs to correct less, which reduces fatigue.
The infotainment system is among the
best in the industry. It’s well placed in the
driver’s line of sight and easy to navigate
using the rotary dial. It can read texts and
emails aloud and now comes with DAB+
digital radio and internet radio (Pandora,
Stitcher and Aha) but no Apple CarPlay or
Android Auto at this stage.
The other piece of tech Mazda has added is
a ‘Natural Sound Smoother’. This is mounted
inside each piston of the diesel engine and
absorbs vibrations as the piston travels up
and down. The result is quite amazing.
There’s no trademark diesel ‘chatter’, even
during start-up and hard acceleration.
This update adds even better value to
what was already a strong proposition in the
mid-sized market. In GT and Atenza guise,
the Mazda6 offers a premium car without
the premium price tag. – Jaedene Hudson
Pros: Has a more premium feel; diesel is
supremely refined; great dynamics
Cons: Minimal exterior changes; no Apple
CarPlay; some safety gear missing in Sport
